I believe that the pronunciation back at Douglas' time could be real eng instead of ing. His dictionary is quite narrow in transcription and there are many instances in his dictionary saying that certain transcriptions are better than others. Examples like ien better than ian, iet better than iat and oa better than wa abound in his dictionary.
Besides, sounds like eng and ieng as well as real ek and iek also exist in Taiwan, just they are not predominant sounds.
