The Austroasiatics in Ancient South China: Some Lexical Evidence

本文通过南汉语的一些底层词汇证明古代中国南方的居民是南亚语系的族裔,里面有论及闽语。论文数位化得不太好,有错别字及乱码,不过无碍于理解。

摘要:It is well known that ancient South China was almost exclusively populated by non-Chinese peoples whose identity and location, however, remain to be determined. The purpose of this paper is to contribute some lexical evidence towards the solution of this problem. In particular, we will try to show that the Austroasiatics inhabited the shores of the middle Yangtze and parts of the southeast coast during the first half of the first millennium B.C., and that the Chinese borrowed the name of the Yangtze from them. Other words indicating early contact between these two peoples will also be discussed.
